There are certainly many more jobs outside the hospital setting than many nurses think. Of course most nurses myself included tend to believe that the only place to make real money is in the hospital. For the creative and resourceful nurse there are lots of exciting rewarding jobs that offer greater autonomy and more money. My own job working with developmentally disabled adults is such a job. Plus I have one of the best bosses I've ever had. IF my patients need something they get it - no quibbling over managed care contracts, MY car and gas exspenses are fully paid, and I'm home every night with my family. I got this job by answering an add in the newspaper that said "Nurses are you tired of overtime and weekends!"

    Peace and Namaste

I actually have been an EMT for 9 years now, and I decided to get my RN so that I could work with Doctors Without Boarders....it's certainly not for everyone, especially with kids etc., but for me it is the sole inspiration for me becoming a nurse in the first place. I'm just trying to get one more year of experience in and a second language and I'll be there!!! (the website is: http://doctorswithoutborders.org/ ) check it out if you are thinking about stepping outside the box!
