Medication test for employment

Has anybody had to take the NLN medication test for a new employer? I thought this type of test went out with the dark ages. Who has to calculate drip rates anymore? I would like some info on this test.....
Thanks,
Mimi

Re: Medication test for employment

The NLN is largely used as an assessment tool. It measures where a student falls within the learning process, it is used by hospitals and other nursing employment agencies to measure a nurse's abilities. It is like getting a baseline. As far as measuring drip rates, well I think we are on the cusp of never having to that again. Until... there are still times in nursing when you must utilize this skill. The NLN tests are available to institutions only. I would think that the NCLEX would be sufficient for review. Hope this helps.

Re: Medication test for employment

I've take both medication test and calculation test at most places I have worked, just not the NLN version but an in house test.
I'd much rather do those than the PBDS testing, I can calculate drugs in my sleep. PBDS requires thinking.

This site is really great to help brush up on calculating dosages and drips.

Employers just want to make sure that you can "do the math." Think about it, the test is the easy part. The challenging part is doing the job. Worry about bigger and better things.

Re: Medication test for employment

Almost everyplace I've worked has a med test to take.
Some have gone to the NLN as it is a standard. But how long has it been since a doc ordered grains of ASA? Do they even know what that is?!
OK I'm showing my age...just had a birthday and feeling it!!
At least that test is standard...you should see some of the ones I've taken! I even asked once who made up the test as the questions didn't make any sense!!
