Re: My Update

I have an interesting combo for you...

Current age 46. (47 next month)
Active Duty for 2yr11mo (honorable) as USAF officer (84-87)
Currently hold BE-EE.
Start ASN-RN in May and will be done Jul 2010 with age @48.
Last MEPS required waiver for treatment of HPV (around 10 yrs prior, no recurrence). All other health checks A-OK. (side note: ASVAB score 98 with line scores between 135 - 145 ) LOL [The FLANG was looking to put me in as WO....never finished app process.]

Would that allow AD or would I still need an actual BSN. (I was looking to do RN - MSN for next phase of education.)

With a four year degree you would be eligible for a commission. However, to come on active duty [Active Component] into the Army Nurse Corps you would need a BSN.

If, you will be starting an ADN-BSN [ASN-RN?], and thus already an RN [ADN] you are eligible for Reserve Component Army Nurse Corps.

BTW, if I read correctly on another thread your daughter recently redeployed [returned]. Glad she is home safe.

Re: My Update

Thanks, CPT!

I did call a couple of recruiters. I got that same info, so it would be the reserves.....

But since my hubby is ANG-AGR, I called the AMEDD recruiter for the guard. The Guard has reduced the # of nursing slots so the FLANG is currently over strength (140 %). Honestly, I was SHOCKED at the kind of money they pay their nurses!!!!

As an alternative, he suggested that if I had all the pre-reqs done for a PA school and applied and was accepted, they would send me to SA for PA school. Good lord that is tempting. But, the truth is: I still have my youngest at home (16) and though my Army DD said she would take care of her...and my DH would spend one year of that time in Afganistan....not sure I want to do that and be away for that long.

I have some decisions to make!

Oh, and yes, you are correct. She is home! Thanks!!!

If, I had it do to all over I'd gone the PA route, Army or civilian.

CAPT.

"If, I had it do to all over I'd gone the PA route, Army or civilian."

Would you expand on that thought?

Well, I do like that in the AMEDD [Army Medical Dept] that an officer is an officer no matter MD, RN, Physical Therapist, Physician Assistant, etc. In otherwords, in the AMEDD RN's are respected on the same level as MD's, which in civilian healthcare is not always true. Plus, in the AMEDD males make up about 33% of the RN pop., whereas in the civilian sector it is around 7% Therefore, in the AMEDD male RN's are not as much in the minority as they are in civilian nursing.

Yet, if I could go back in time my preference would have been PA, more so in the AMEDD but civilian PA for an Orthopedic Surgeon would have been cool. In the AMEDD, PA's are about as valuable as MD's. I realize males are more accepted in the nursing profession now compared to years past. However, it will be years down the road before society, as a whole, considers the nursing profession gender-neutral.

Nonetheless, at almost 48 years old I'm very content with being an RN.

In my OR rotations I see the autonomy with the PA or NP being a plus in the ortho roll. I am all about the autonomy because I am as old as dirt and want the leverage to say no when no needs to be said and not have the repercussions. At least in the civilian world.
