I will be sucsessful, but in what area

I am a second year adult nursing student that is looking for a focus in my nursing studies. I am the type of person who if not stimulated can get very board and disrtacted, in class I unfortunately can sometimes disrupt the class with questions to the tutor on the need for, what I see as pointless nonsense. Over here in england the universities are hung up on reflective learning. When I tell them I have been reflecting since I can remember they say "it's on the program we have to get you to do it"

    An example of their exercises:

"You are traped on an island with 10 people.
    A drug adict
    A pregnant teenager
    A homosexual
    A police officer
A teacher who is also a comunnist
A politian (of course he'd have to stay on the island by default)
    A soldier
A murderer (don't ask me how you know. he'd hardly tell everyone)
    A telly tubbie
Phill Collins (please leave him behind)

You can only take off 3 people, disscus who you take off and why."

Frankly who cares, this has nothing to do with nursing.
At least that is my opinion.

Well that was me digressing now back to the reason for posting this dissution. I am confident that I will be sucsessful (and so will you, YES YOU) in my new career.

After working in factory's for 10 years doing repetative boaring work I have finally found somthing interesting, motivating, inspiring and rewarding.

However as mentioned above there are some aspects of nursing education that can be mind numbingly boaring, that is why I am looking for a focus, I have spoken to a nurse consultant, Emergency nurse practioners and numerous other health care staff for adivice on areas to explore

    any ideas

You should ask your tutors/lecturers what the learning exercises have to do with nursing. Very often students (myself included) may feel that what they're being taught in class doesn't have anything to do with the discipline they are studying.

Once you figure why it is your studying/being taught something, generally it can make the learning process much easier.

They tell us the reason they are giving us the exercises is to encourage us to reflect more, but sitting on an island doesn't help me to reflect on nursing, as it has no relation to nursing. I keep asking them why don't these class exercises have it's focus on nursing rather than obscure topics

In a nurses everyday activity critical thinking can be pretty important - which as you may know involves the use of forming conclusions, making decisions, drawing inferences, and reflecting. I'm going to assume you already know this, but for nurses, reflection may involve thinking back on a client/pt situation or experience to explore the info & other factors which influenced handling of a situation.

Reflection may assist a nurse to seek + understand relationships btw concepts learned in a classroom and in clinical situations. Reflection can help a nurse judge personal performance & make judgements about level of practice.

With all that said, I can see what you mean - the exercise not having much to do with nursing. How do your classmates feel about the activities your being given? Perhaps if a group of you feel the same (and after talking with your instructor/tutor re: how you feel) the instructor may structure the reflective exercises differently in order to help the activities have more to do with nursing?
