self scheduling

My unit is trying to set up self scheduling for the ER. Does anyone have some guidlines that are working in self scheduling and do you have senority benefits with scheduling

We had that at both ERs i worked at. It was FABULOUS!!!!

we don't have self scheduling but the boss puts out a schedule then we all trade for days we want. The schedule pretty much stays as she puts it but there are a couple of trades every schedule...then we all turn in request lists for days off and she's real good about giving you off what you need in the first place.

set a skill mix

e.g.a minimum of one shift leader , 2 senior nurses , 4 junior nurses, 2 NAs - and a minim staffing e.g. 7 RN +2 NA

split the roster up ( by agreement if it isn't already) into people who are 'shift leaders' , 'senior nurses' and 'junior nurses' - you might need to split the junior nurses again into 'role competent junior nurse' ( which fo rthe Dept i have just moved from was TNCC, ILS or ALS . triage/assessment trained, can suture and not 'fully role copmpetent'

you can work 'down' but ordinarily you can't work 'up'

e.g. using the above model you could have 2 shift leaders on and 1 senior and 4 juniors or 2 seniors and 3 juniors

make it clear what you expect of people :

- take you fair share of nights, weekends etc (unless otherwise agreed with the Nurse manager).

- don't change others shifts ( get people to write on the request sheet in pen rather than pencil).

- don't form cliques
