Excelsior Program - How does it work?

I would really appreciate getting info on Excelsior's online LPN/LVN to RN program from any current or former student of the program. How difficult is it? How costly is it? How prepared were you for the NCLEX? etc., etc.

    Hello Deb,

This is one school that participates in the Excelsior program, you can read about their requirements here:

"Beginning in the 1997 Summer Session, Pikeville College initiated a program which allows Licensed Practical Nurses to complete the associate degree nursing program in one summer session and two semesters. Sixteen hours of nursing credit can be earned by taking the Excelsior College examinations which cover the content in NUR 110, NUR 115, NUR 120, and NUR 125.

LPNs admitted to the nursing program will be required to take NUR 130, LPN to RN Transition (3 hours) prior to admission in the fall. Students must achieve a grade of “C” (2.0) or better to progress in the program and for credit earned by examination to be placed on the transcript. Completion of NUR 130 will allow students to join the sophomore class in the third semester of the program and graduate in May. Graduates will then be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN)."

You can read more about their Admission policies on their homepage here:

    Hope that helps,

Hello! I'm in an LPN program right now and I am looking into the future to continue my studies to become and RN. Is is true that some states do not recognize EC when it comes to schooling? I am new to all of this.
    Thanks!

It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't. Wouldn't you be a little leery of a nurse who got their license through the Internet? I'd check with the school and see if their programs are accepted in your state.
