It is a real headache and to top it all some of the surgerys receptionists are very rude, they either hang up on us or dont allow us to speak to the doctor. We will have to find out a solution it is not fair to the patient and also us nurses who care for them. Thank you Marita

Now that's bad. I've dealt with my share of idiot doctors and rude/ controlling receptionists but have never been hung up on or diverted. I've had to wait for a callback and sometimes had to call again but I've always eventually gotten the doctor. If this is a chronic issue your facility administrator has to deal with it because you're right, without reasonably prompt physician involvement, the patient is not getting proper care. Period.

Hope things get better for you.

Re: New Icu Rn Feels Bullied.....

My first question is to marita, I can tell from your terminology we are not in the same place on the globe, so please excuse my ignorance, but what is an EEN?

My second question is to jackar, are you new to ICU only or new to ICU and nursing both? If the answer is both, maybe the people on the unit are treating you bad becasue they feel like you shouldn't be there at all...I've noticed that behavior from alot of ICU, ER and OR nurses towards new nurses in those fields. Alot of times those "seasoned" nurses feel like new nurses should of had to do med surg or tele before they could be competant to be in a critical care area.

And before anyone thinks I am being judgmental, I am saying that that is an attitude that I have seen alot of the time (not all of the time), and I am not a critical care nurse so the feeling does not apply to me...i am just offering it up as a possible answer

Hi Amber,

I am in ICU and have worked in OR/PACU and Tele and agree with your observation of "our" attitude toward new nurses. This is old school thinking that is grounded in experience however I don't believe that it applies across the board. Most new nurses do need to develop their skills and Med-Surg is the place to do it. The Telemetry unit is an environment that requires skills beyond fresh grad level too although many new nurses do start there. To be honest, new nurses who are ready to work in critical care are relatively uncommon but they are out there and deserve the chance. A well designed critical care orientation provides exposure to the skill sets necessary but the rest has to come from the individual. To be considered for such a position that new nurse has to really stand out before the investment in the training is made.

Re: New Icu Rn Feels Bullied.....

I completly understand the logic. It makes alot of sense, but at the same time I also see alot of hospitals actually pushing nurses into those critical care fields becasue they are so short staffed. I do med/Surg, Tele and cardiac step-down, a pretty wide area, but at one time I thought about transfering to ICU, then when I saw what the needs list was like while touring the unit I quickly changed my mind. IT scared me to death to think of working like that with those kind of patients, so I can imagine how a new grad nurse would not be suitable to be there. Besides that, a nurse really should start out somewhere like Med Surg just to learn priortization skills if nothing else.
