CA state corrections rn's making >100,000??

Ok, I had to post this because I was so surprised to see that rn's working at correctional facilities in california are making $7,000-$9000 a month and bonus's and $139 a night shift diff! Not that I plan to run off and work in San Quentin but it was post worthy. I have friends working in correctional facilities here in Michigan and they only make about $28 an hour and they pay a great deal out of that for subpar benefits. They do say that they never feel unsafe. Hmmmm...

Ha, do I detect a hint of irony? There is some sort of attraction about passing antipsychotic meds to the most infamous headliners...lol. Esp when it amounts to a six figure income. As grateful as I am to have a career that's in high demand and secure I'm just not one to romanticize nursing in general but I'll give it a try: isn't everyone entitled to quality healthcare? That should heat it up a bit.

Re: CA state corrections rn's making >100,000??

I work in Ca. corrections at a level 4 Prison. Everyone I give medical care to are usually those who have been stabbed over a gambling debt..... owing soups or cosmetics. I have worked for the Prison system for 10 yrs. I cannot remember the first Inmate I responded to on the yard. I cannot remember the number of Inmates killed in the 10 yrs I have been employed as an RN- Correctional Facility. The Gangs run drugs, prostitution, extortion, murder etc. Have I been scared? Everyday.... Am I burned out? Yes... Have I seen Staff assaulted over nothing more than opportunity? I have. Correctional work in general is not for everybody. The wages are good but the work is hazardous. It is a thin line between Staff and Inmate.....
