Patients can receive stress relief from massage

November 16, 2004: Kansas: Pregnant and postpartum patients can receive stress relief from massage:"Becky Stoermann-Snelson, RN, NCTMB, CIMI, has been a labor and delivery nurse for 26 years and currently works PRN at Saint Luke's South. After more than two decades of experience with pregnant and postpartum women, she decided to add another valuable skill to her repertoire. In 2001, Stoermann-Snelson returned to school to become a massage therapist."

Would be nice if all hospitals offered this service!

Yep, that's a fact. The local spa/salon in my town offers massage therapy also. They get a lot of business from the local hospital down the road.

It's also a skill many nurses are learning to start their own businesses away from the bedside.

Sounds a bit like Chiropractic to me. They're known for treating their patients long after the initial event is taken care of. Long as insurance continues to cover it and the patient keeps coming back to be "comforted" they would just hate to lose the extra business.

The massages I have been getting from my physical tx have been to the point of useless. So I went to a real masseuse the other day. when I left I felt as if I was driving under the influence. I bet I could not pass a sobriety test. It was the first time in 4-5 years my lower back did not hurt. This I will go back once a month.

Hhhahaha, sign me up, man! Speaking of Chiropractor, I used to think they were not much better than witch doctors, but had a bad back injury a few years ago, ate Vicodin and watched my left leg shrink in size due to nerve damage, went to a Chriopractor ONCE and it was fixed. I rethought my prejudice.

My husband has had pain for some time--he's had all the diagnostics, but not much shows up or, in any case, they can't do much for him. The ONLY relief he has had (we refuse to give in to narcotics) has been myofascial massage, accupressure and accupuncture from a legitimate, licensed massage therapist. We have also learned many things about diet and lifestyle. I don't know much about chiropractic, but the medical profession needs to pay attention to what is working to help patients. Have you ever given a 2-min foot or back massage to a patient and noticed it worked better than anything else? The only other thing as beneficial is humor--I think watching an episode of I Love Lucy, The Beverly Hillbillies, or The Three Stooges is more therapeutic for my patients than almost anything I can do for them.

Only the patient can say what's working for their pain. Whether it is holistic or conventional medicine, there are no guaranteed cures or effective treatments.

I'd guess that most doctors have little faith in alternatives because the simply cannot understand how they could help. After having traditional medicine grilled into them as the end-all, be-all treatments, it's a little difficult to give credence to other alternatives out there.

With the amount of snake oils and quacks that are out there, ready and willing to take your money, it is healthy to be more than a bit skeptical.
