October 12, 2004: California: Patient Dies At Hospital After Nurse Fails To Check On Him
Nurse Turns Down Audio Alarm On Vital-Signs Monitor:"A nurse turned down an audio alarm on a vital-signs monitor and then failed to notice when a 28-year-old AIDS patient went into cardiac distress and died, county health officials said.
The incident was the latest crisis for the county-owned Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, where federal inspectors say five patients died from negligence last year and others were given improper medication.
Three of the patients died after nurses did not watch their cardiac monitors -- a situation similar to Thursday's death."

I am a Peds nurse who floats to other general med floors when census is low. I am appauled by how many nurses ignore the call light system on these other floors! They don't like to see me coming because I always make it a point to point out that the system is turned down...then follow it up with..."Here ...let me show you guys how to turn it up!!!"
If the call light is on....there IS a reason!!!!
