A prominent vascular surgeon gets a phone call from his medical school.

"Dr. Smith? I'm calling for the alumni fund. It's been over fifteen years since your graduation, and we've never received a contribution from you."

"Listen," the surgeon says, "I have an elderly mother with no means of support. My sister's husband was killed, leaving her with five young children to raise alone. My younger brother, who has no health insurance, has multiple complications of diabetes!"

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize," mumbles the fund-raiser.

The surgeon continues, "And since I don't give anything to them, I'm not going to give anything to you either."
