Hi!

I am a college senior, getting my B.S. in Community Health. Throughout my college career, I have taught health education classes, created health education programs, and worked in patient education and migrant outreach. I am currently a CNA at a non-profit for low-income HIV/AIDS residents where I am delegated tasks by an RN (medicine, glucose checks, insulin, etc.). I feel that I have done more volunteer work than the average ELMSN candidate. What I am worried about is my grades:

Cumulative: 3.2
Last 60 credits:3.7
Science GPA (stats, A&P, micro): 3.5

I still have to take the GRE and the TEAS (potentially, depending on school). I am looking to go to a school with a great program (obviously) but also a school that will consider my volunteer work and essay statement as an important part of my application. I have a list of schools that I am looking at, and I am taking time off after I graduate to explore each school, the pre-reqs, strengths of the program, nursing paths offered, etc. BUT I would like to know the opinion of those have been in the application process longer than I have. So, what do you think?

This seems like a fine place to get aquatinted with
the field from a legitimate perspective. I'm hoping to
glean from Your expertise to better prepare and
more readily acclimate to my future. It's a late start
but I plan to work the next 30 years and would like to
do it in nursing, no not a nursing home; big plans, little time.
Currently I'm a builder in the St. Louis area.

To the students and seasoned, hello and thank You for the forum.

I posted this reply in another thread and decided it would be smart to start one discussion on NCLEX apps. Here is my analysis of the ones I have tried:
Kaplan's rationales are garbage and many answers are incorrectly labeled.
Saunders doesn't have enough information or questions.
Lippincott has some wrong information, I don't think they tried very hard with this one.
ATI doesn't have challenging questions and may be other about half of what they charge.
NCLEX mastery seems pretty accurate and is challenging, it also has a bunch of little extras to help you prepare. worth the price.

Discuss

After the long list of what i can not eat,use as perfume, cleaning supplies,sauces.....Hmmm...Going out of my mind. I figured this would be a long road of recovery as I have not been able to get clean since i left the program 10 years ago..I thought this would make me accountable to someone. Now I feel I have entered the gates of hell or some Nazi organization.:moon::moon: No chicken marsala,no soy sauce, change of mouthwash!!! Really??? I realize I need someone to be in control of my life as I have not been doing a good job at it. I realize this is my fault,my decision's, my life but ETG testing that is not even considered an adequate measurement of drinking, not supposed to be used for punitive punishment. I have lost what is left of my mind, as I will stay clean but that does not mean the ETG test will agree with me.

I heard that there is a nursing shortage myth, and that the market is saturated with too many nurses.
Is that true for CNAs too?

I was thinking after a few weeks of getting the CNA certificate I could get a CNA position right away. I am thinking in particular overnight shifts at either at nursing home or home health agency. Do you think the market is good enough that I can get an overnight position soon after getting my certificate?
